There are young carers living in Sandwell whose health, education and social lives are greatly impacted as a result of providing care to an ill and/or disabled family member, or due to supporting a parent with a drug or alcohol addiction.
Pharmacists play a vital role in identifying young carers as they will often attend Chemists on a regular basis to collect prescriptions, purchase over the counter medication, or accompany the ‘cared for’ when collecting prescriptions or having a Consultation.
If you are working with a young carer then you could be that one professional on their journey through life who makes a big difference to their future. We can help you make that happen. All you have to do is;
- Make a referral to Sandwell Young Carers to provide the young carer with support and a break from their caring role by using this link: Referral form
- Request an assessment of their needs through Sandwell Children’s Trust on 0121 569 3100. You can access information on the assessment at Sandwell Children’s Trust Online Procedures Manual .
The Children and Families Act 2014 amended the Children Act to make it easier for young carers to get an assessment of their needs and to introduce 'whole family' approaches to assessment and support. Local authorities must offer an assessment where it appears that a child is involved in providing care. You can assess more information on young carers needs assessment here.
For further information and support please refer to the Pharmacy Toolkit aimed at Pharmacists and their team, when looking to support young carers in Sandwell,Pharmacist Toolkit.
If you feel your colleagues/team would benefit from training/awareness raising on the effects of caring on young carers, then please contact the Promotion & Awareness Team at Sandwell Young Carers on 0121 525 7667 to arrange a workshop/training session.
Thank you for taking the time to support young carers. Remember you are not alone. Sandwell Young Carers works in partnership with all colleagues looking to identify and support young carers. Let’s work together to find the many, still hidden, young carers living in Sandwell.
